Podcasting How To

The Power of Women in Podcasting

In the last few years, women-hosted podcasts have become more prevalent and influential within the podcasting community. Listeners are tuning in more and more to podcasts hosted by women, and insights from the Women’s Podcast Report by Edison Research and SXM Media shed light on the trends driving this shift.

The statistics tell the story: a staggering 90% of female monthly podcast listeners tune in to content crafted by fellow women. Furthermore, nearly half of these listeners express a preference for brands that advertise on podcasts hosted by women. These numbers underscore not only the significance of female representation in podcasting but also the impact it has on audience perceptions and brand engagement.

Yet, despite comprising 46% of the monthly podcast audience in the U.S., women have historically been underrepresented both as listeners and creators. While the gender gap has been narrowing in recent years, there remains a disparity in the podcasting landscape. In fact, only 29% of weekly podcast creators are women, highlighting the need for initiatives that aim to amplify female voices in the industry.

In spite of the underrepresentation, women have exhibited tremendous passion and loyalty for the podcasting space. Females dedicate nearly a third of their daily audio consumption to podcasts (32%, to be exact), and three in four women podcast listeners say they listen to stay entertained while doing mundane tasks. You can see several of the female-hosted Podbean podcasts here. This significant share of “ear time” underscores the importance of catering to the preferences and interests of female listeners in podcast content and advertising strategies.

In addition, the demographics of female podcast listeners are diverse and compelling. Nearly half are aged 12-34, indicating a burgeoning audience segment with immense potential for even higher growth and engagement. As this demographic solidifies its listening habits and continues to embrace the podcast medium, a valuable opportunity is emerging for content creators and advertisers alike to connect with a truly receptive and influential audience.

From these statistics, we can see that the rise of women in podcasting is not just a trend…it’s a transformative force that could potentially reshape the industry landscape. This needs to be recognized, nurtured, and supported, as both podcasters and brands can unlock new avenues for creativity and growth engagement in the ever-evolving world of audio content.

I would love to find out how promote my podcast. It is all about women’s stories. Any advice? Thanks, Lynda

Hi Lynda! If you’re hosted with Podbean, you can submit for your podcast to be featured on the Podbean app and browser site through this form here: https://t.ly/LIxl5

There is a bit of backlog so it’s not an immediate promotion, but it does boost your podcast’s discoverability by a substantial amount!

  2. Podcasts are very viral at the moment. You can get income from there, but it’s not easy to start..
