The Best True Crime Podcasts: A Selection of Podbean Podcasts for True Crime Fans

True crime fans rejoice! The unparalleled worldwide success of true crime podcast Serial has spurred a continued boom in true crime podcasts. Along with the overall growth in podcast listening, true crime podcasts lead the way as some of the most downloaded podcasts.

What makes true crime podcasts so popular?

True crime, like many other types of podcasts, really comes down to compelling storytelling. True crime brings in elements of suspense, mystery, psychology, law and more. The stories we hear in true crime may at times be horrific, but they are also stories of human nature in all its diversity. The stories cut across culture and time.

You can now find a huge range of true crime podcasts, from deep investigative journalism of unsolved cases to true crime comedy. Podcasters have created true crime podcasts specific to place (for example, our list below includes a couple of podcasts focused on Canadian crimes and one from the U.S. south), covering one type of crime, or an aspect of crime such as psychology and profiling. Others tie in movies or pop culture based on true crimes.

Whatever you like, there’s a true crime podcast out there for you. Even podcast listeners who don’t consider themselves true crime fans may just get hooked with all these options.

Check out Podbean’s pick of some of the best podcasts for true crime fans from our Podbean family of podcasts:

Podcasts to Celebrate Pride Month 2019

Pride month 2019 Podbean

Pride Month is celebrated each year in June. All over the world, various events are held during the month as a way of recognizing the influence LGBTQ+ people have had around the world. June was chosen to mark the historic Stonewall Riots that happened in 1969. These riots were prompted by a raid that took place during the early morning, at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. The LGBT community held a series of demonstrations to protest the raid and calling for the establishment of places that gays and lesbians could go and safely be open about their sexual orientation.

Since that time, much has changed. Yet, along with the celebration, Pride month is an opportunity to peacefully protest and raise awareness of the continued/current issues facing the community.

In honor of Pride Month 2019, Podbean has selected some podcasts representing diverse voices. Some of these podcasts explore intimate coming-out stories and may discuss topics like commitment and relationships, talking to family members, and dealing with bias. Others address viewpoints on gender equality and gay marriage, while a few of the podcasts just have fun and laugh at the latest pop culture trends or explore life.

You can find this topic featured in the Podbean app to listen on the go. If you don’t already have the Podbean app, download it for free in the App Store or Google Play store. It’s the best way to listen and discover new podcasts you’ll love, with recommendations of hot topics plus personalized recommendations based on what you listen to most. Podbean Unveils Enhanced Audio Recorder and Editing Features in its App

audio recorder app

The Podbean Podcasting App’s Audio Recorder Function Offers a Range of New Effects and Post-Production Tools

Wilmington, DE – January 24, 2019– The Podbean app features an audio recorder function, allowing podcasters to record and publish audio podcasts right from their iPhone or Android devices. The newly-released version of the app provides a robust suite of recording and editing features for the podcaster to create even better audio.

The latest version of the Podbean audio recorder provides a rich library of free background music in various styles and moods that podcasters can use in their recordings. It also offers special effect sounds, tone adjustment, and echo effects to mimic different surroundings. After recording, podcasters can use the editing features to cut the audio, merge two recordings or split recordings. Podcasters can also import background music and other audio files, as well as export their recorded audio to easily use other professional editing tools or repurpose content.

“As we all do more on our mobile phones, we’re encountering more podcasters who want to be able to record and publish on the go,” said David Xu, Podbean’s CEO. “We released the audio recorder in the app in 2016 and have continued working to make it more functional for podcasters producing mobile audio. This is the first in a series of upgrades to the recording and post-production features in the Podbean app.”

For an overview of features, visit Podbean’s audio recorder page. You can download the Podbean app free from the App Store or Google Play. Podbean is seeking feedback to continue improving and enhancing the audio recorder for podcasters. Contact Podbean Support to provide feedback or get help.

Engaging Your Audience: Viewing and Managing Podcast Comments

Manage comments 4

Podbean offers various audience engagement tools in the Podbean app. One of the primary tools is listener comments. Podcasters can read comments, reply, add their own comments and delete inappropriate comments.

We have now added these comments to your Podbean podcast site. If you click on an episode, any comments you have will be listed there. You will also be able to see recent comments on the home page of your Podbean dashboard. This gives you a quick view of the latest feedback from listeners. You can then go into the Podbean app to manage your podcast comments.

Engaging with your listeners via Podbean app comments is great for building rapport with the audience. It also gives listeners one of the easiest ways to leave you feedback right when they’re listening. This is often a much more likely way to receive feedback and engagement than other methods separate from where they listen. And, an additional benefit is that engagement helps our app algorithms to better tailor suggestions to listeners. In other words, if your show demonstrates high engagement in comments the app is more likely to recommend your podcast to listeners of similar shows.

If you have any questions, contact us anytime at help.podbean.com or via live chat.

Sharing a Spiritual Message via Podcast: The Story of a Successful Daily Jewish Podcast

Podbean hosted podcast

The 5-Minute Daf Yomi podcast with Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld is a daily show that’s recently achieved 100,000 downloads. Rabbi Herzfeld has published more than 700 straight episodes of the podcast, which provides commentary and insight into a page of the Talmud in around five minutes. These concise spiritual lessons have been popular with listeners around the world. Rabbi Herzfeld’s podcast was recently featured in a Jewish community newspaper, which shared stories of the many ways the Rabbi has spread Jewish teachings over the years and how podcasting is extending that.

Rabbi Herzfeld took some time to share his thoughts on podcasting with us. Read on to learn how podcasting can be a simple and fruitful way to share a message.

Why did you decide to start a podcast?

I started to do a podcast because I found that not enough people in our congregation were able to attend my daily Talmud class. I originally started it so that I could share one short spiritual teaching with our congregation on a daily basis.

Was starting a podcast easy for you?

I am technologically inept so I was very skeptical about being able to do a podcast. I thought it would take me hours of extra work and that I wouldn’t have the resources to do it. I was shocked at how easy it was for me to record a podcast using the Podbean app. Basically I just use my smartphone and speak into it and then upload it. It’s so simple.

What have you discovered since having a podcast, or what’s surprised you?

When I started I was shocked at how many people listened. The Talmud is a very esoteric text and I use a lot of technical terms but clearly there are fans of the podcast. This gratifies me because I believe the message of the Talmud is a pure spiritual message worthy to share with people.

I am always surprised when strangers tell me that they hear my podcast. One time a lawyer actually cited one of my podcasts as part of a legal proceeding. I got a kick out of it.

But my favorite times are when my children listen to it and cite it back to me.

What tools have you used to promote your podcast?

The only promoting of the podcast that I have done is that I use it as my signature in my email and I post every episode on my Facebook account. (Podbean has auto share options that make social media easy!)

What’s in the future for your podcast?

There are over 2700 pages of the Talmud and it is my goal to do a show for each of the pages. I have less than 2000 episodes to go!

When I am recording the podcast I feel that I am not only making an episode for people today but also a teaching for my children’s children and future generations.

What one thing would you tell someone thinking about starting a podcast?

To all those who think they have a compelling message to share I suggest you don’t worry about how many listeners you will have, just be true to your message!

5-Minute Daf Yomi with Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld can be found on Podbean. Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of Ohev Sholom – The National Synagogue provides commentary and insight into the daily Daf (a page of Talmud studied around the world), offering spiritual lessons from the Torah and Jewish tradition.

Want to know about creating a podcast on Podbean? Read more and learn about recording a podcast right from your phone with the Podbean app.

Better Listening with Enhanced Android App Features

We’ve added two exciting new features to the Podbean Android app (coming soon for iOS too). With these features, you can customize your listening experience to your preferences and listening conditions.

Instruction page

Volume boost normalizes volume to make listening in noisy situations easier. With dynamic compression equalization, listeners get a more consistent volume. This can really help when podcasts don’t have perfect sound and for listening when there’s a lot of background noise.

Intelligent speed shortens silences in the podcast without distorting the audio. It’s a great way to save time while listening at a normal speed.

To use these features, simply click on the “speedometer” icon on the bottom right when listening to a podcast. You will be able to apply the features there. You can read more about How to Use Intelligent Speed and Volume Boost for Podbean’s Android podcast app here.
