Premium Content: How to Charge a Fee for a Podcast Episode

Podbean offers various ways for podcasters to monetize their content. One of these methods is premium content; you can charge for subscription-based content or for individual episodes (single track premium). With Podbean, premium options are totally customizable and you can charge what you want.

Here are the easy steps to charge for a single episode:

First, go to the “Premium” tab in your dashboard to activate premium (click on “Activate Now”). You will need to connect your account with Stripe for payout. Follow the easy steps for Stripe activation. Once activated, you’ll be directed to “Premium Settings” to set the basic settings.

To create single-episode premium content, simply go to “Publish” in your dashboard to publish the episode. You can choose “Free” or “Premium” (for paid content). Click on “Premium” and you will two options: premium plan or “Sell single episode”. Select “Sell single episode” and set the fee you wish to charge (minimum fee is 50 cents due to Stripe’s requirements).

When you publish the episode, it will include the link to “Buy Single Episode Now”. When users click there, they will get a pop up to input their credit card information for payment via Stripe. They will then be redirected to a screen to create a password (if they are already logged into a Podbean account, it will skip this step) and then will be directed to the information page where they can download/listen to the episode. Anytime they are logged in using the associated email and password (on site or in the Podbean app), they can view and listen to this content*.

Podbean makes it super simple to manage your premium content. We handle the technical needs, payment processing and service for a reasonable revenue share (no upfront fees or limits). If you have any problems, contact our Support team for help.

*Users cannot purchase content in the Podbean app due to Android and iPhone restrictions. They must do so on the website, but once they have purchased it, the content will be available in the app if they’re logged in with the account they used to make the purchase.

Note: If you wish for some paid content to be available to subscribers as well as for separate purchase, please post the file twice choosing each corresponding option. For best results, please name the audio files with different names.

Here are the detailed instructions to submit your podcast:

1. Go to http://www.podbean.com. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Click on “Submit your podcast”.

2. You’ll be directed to the login page. Log into or sign up for a Podbean account (no cost for a free account).

3. Fill in your podcast feed and click on “Submit”. Follow the steps as instructed.

4. Keep the url and your login information for future reference. Your page will automatically update from your podcast feed. You can also get clickable buttons to put on your site.

* Podbean users with Podbean paid plans are automatically in the directory. For Podbean free accounts, you must verify your account first to be included in the directory. The verification steps will appear in your Podbean account’s dashboard 15 days after your account is created. Your podcast will appear in the Podbean Directory within 24 to 48 hours.

If you are already in the Podbean directory but have not yet claimed your listing, simply go to the listing page and click “claim listing” on the left. This will ensure you are notified of comments and other opportunities.

If you wish to delist your podcast from Podbean’s directory and app for some reason, you can contact our Support team any time to do so. Please note, this means your podcast will no longer be available to Podbean app users.

How Long Will It Take to Make My Podcast to Appear in iTunes?

Once you have submitted your podcast to iTunes, the amount of time until it will be available depends on the iTunes review process. You can check the status of your submission in Podcasts Connect. If there are any errors or you have been rejected, please check the problem and resubmit. You can see a list of reasons for being rejected or removed here. Validation errors can occur for a number of reasons such as “mismatched tags, artwork that does not meet the minimum requirements, or unescaped ampersands”. Podcasts Connect displays validation errors at the top of the new podcast page.

Once your podcast is reviewed and approved by Apple: “you receive an email confirmation indicating your submission review is complete. Your confirmation email also includes the link to your active podcast. The podcast link is live on the iTunes Store shortly after the email is sent. Your podcast is not searchable in the iTunes Store until it is indexed, which can take up to 24 hours.”
